Dr. Judith Reichman and Misinformation on MSNBC website

DrErika's Notepad

Here we go again. More misinformation from an outdated doctor whose ego is far larger than her fund of knowledge.

On May 31, 2005, Dr. Judith Reichman, the medical contributor to the Today Show answered a question about bioidentical hormones on the MSNBC website.

In her answer she slammed bioidentical hormones as unproven and not FDA approved or tested, compounding pharmacies as shady businesses out to make money off the poor patient as compared to the pharmaceutical industry who is out to plain kill us.

Dr. Reichman doesnt even know there is a difference between over the counter supplements and prescription hormones and does not remember that all estrogen is made in the ovary. To bolster the misinformation she dispenses, she throws around words like peer-reviewed, medical journals and the North American Menopause Society.

Before I set the record straight, Id like to point out that FDA approval is not exactly the seal of safety as we found out with Vioxx, Bextra and few other FDA approved meds in the past few months?  Also, the Wall Street Journal last month raised the ever enlarging problem with the issue of unreliability of scientific data.

Finally, the NIH has just started a total review of the methods of collection and reporting of scientific data since clearly we do have a problem with conventional medicine.

So, Dr. Reichman might want to consider the old adage about people in glass houses before giving her answers next time.

Heres the truth about bioidentical hormones:

1, Bioidentical hormones are prescription medications and FDA approved. Their molecular formula is identical to human hormones and, they are NOT made from pregnant mares urine.

2. Compounding pharmacies do not manufacture over the counter products, they fill doctors prescriptions which are FDA approved estrogens, progesterone and testosterone individually compounded so that the patient can adjust the dose and feel better.

3 Progestin is not a compounded hormone, it is a synthetic progesterone found only in commercial pharmaceutical products. Progesterone is the bioidentical hormone we need to balance the negative effects of our own estrogen.

4. Yams and soy are not bioidentical horomones, their oils are used by the pharmaceutical industry to extract estradiol, progesterone and testosterone molecularly identical to human hormones.

5. There are hundreds of clinical studies published in peer-reviewed major medical journals starting in the early 1980s and as recent as 2004 that prove the efficacy and safety of bioidentical hormones. And by the way, they are not outdated.

6. The Lancet article referred to was about Progest cream which is a low progesterone supplement available over the counter no knowledgeable hormone expert would ever recommend to a menopausal patient.

7. Saliva testing is as unreliable as any blood test since indeed, human hormone levels do change all the time. For that reason a good physician will always pay primary attention to the patients symptoms in the decision to treat.

8. The North American Menopause Society is sponsored by grants from Wyeth and Pfizer pharmaceuticals, companies that make synthetic and some natural formulations of hormones and would never promote individual compounded formulations.

Finally, please circulate this e-mail to as many women as you can so that the misinformation given by Dr. Reichman does not continue to poison our already sick healthcare system.
