THURSDAY, 1 February (HealthScout) -- Treatment with either of two drugs in the same chemical family can reduce the risk of potentially fatal hip fractures by 40 per cent in women with osteoporosis, an American study finds.
"This teaches us that we should identify women who have osteoporosis, then use these drugs to reduce the risk of hip fractures," says Dr Michael McClung, director of the Oregon Osteoporosis Centre in Portland and lead author of a paper reporting the finding in the 1 February issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.
